I am at the US Sailing Community Sailing Symposium in Long Beach for a few days. I am speaking on Saturday and Karen (executive director of America True) is going to some of the sessions. We flew in today and were running a bit late so I dropped her off and went to park the car. Well, she had a bit of trouble finding the seminar rooms. First of all they are filming a movie in the lobby so it was chaotic. She made her way through the chaos to the front desk and asked the woman behind the desk if she knew where the seminars were. The woman said —“I don’t know anything”. Karen looked at her perplexed …only to realize … of COURSE you don’t… .It was Hillary Swank ?
The rain that is washing Northern California away doesn’t seem to bother the professionals in Seattle area. Other than the tree days that it rained all the way up to 5000 feet elevation when my family was here looking for a ‘White Christmas” – it snowed and snowed and snowed up at Crystal Mountain.
We spent the whole week at Steve’s family’s log cabin. The dogs LOVED it and now on Monday, back in Tacoma – they are asleep! Yeah! ?
New Years was pretty magical. We called up to the mountain and found out that they were having fireworks at 9pm. We walked up to the hill in a light snowstorm and the fireworks were amazing the way they lit up the sky and reflected off of the snow. I tried to capture this on disc… but after about 50 tries – this is the best I could do.
After the fireworks we went to the bar known as the ‘Snorting Elk’ but which we affectionately call several variations including, the “Wheezing Cow”, or the “Groaning Moose” ? Steve and I got a drink and were standing near a table that was ‘reserved’ with various party accoutrements’. We were watching the Warren Miller films on the television when the party returned and all of the sudden I heard my name – Libby McKee who was with her husband Jonathon from Prada and Morgan Larsen and a bunch of other sailors were the ones who had reserved the table. 2006 start with a reconfirmation that it is a VERY SMALL WORLD!
Now it is back to the office – strategizing for the next year. It is a good think I like to make ‘to do lists’ ? Onward and Upwards…. 06 needs to be a good year for all of us.
Happy New Year!
I have been to Paris and back as well. We announced a new partner that will help us on the design side. We still have a long way to go on the sponsorship but the marketing people 9taht is not me) are working very hard to try and find a few more tens of millions.
The boat show was pretty impressive. This is the first year that I had the time to walk around and look and also, frankly the first year that I knew enough French to be able to have conversations with the vendors. There are three halls that seemed at least as big as the center hall in Atlantic City or Chicago Strictly Sail. One for sail, one for power and the center for most of the accoutrements… like clothing, hardware, propellers, dishes, water purifiers etc. etc.
In Hall 1 – where we were – the ACC boat was in the corner with us next to ONE of the racing pools with fan powered wind for IACC races. There were others for kayaking and sailing and windsurfing etc. etc. There were also major boat builders and manufacturers for instance Yamaha – HUGE propellers for sale….a lot of kayaks, multi-hulls, rotomolded dinghies, beautiful wooden keel boats, canal boats – you know 40 foot cabined pontoon boats and a large variety of the newer sports – kite boarding and of course windsurfing.
The major boat manufacturers bring in what I can only describe as ‘buildings’ PIX
They have 6-8 boats surrounding platforms with offices below and then separate two story buildings for ‘business’.
Also note the wine and cheese…
I walked through the show about 30 minutes before closing and I swear 85% of the people had little cheese and wine and snacks set up and were all gathered around talking and drinking and socializing. That is a nice way to end a day a the show ?
I KNOW – Long time no write … I landed in Tacoma with Steve and for two weeks from 5am – 3pm every day I was on the computer dealing with K-challenge work remotely… but by afternoon I was house organizer/cleaner/decorator extraordinaire.. or at least ‘possessed cleaning woman’ ?
I re-did the laundry and spare bathroom, the guest room and the master bedroom. Basically the only room we haven’t redone over the past year and a half is the office… I guess we are just too busy with the computer to move it out of there in order to paint.
