Over the weekend Diane Wall celebrated her 50th birthday! Unbelievable that by the calendar she is a half of a century – then again it is all a mental state. The weekend was really a lot of fun. We relaxed and then had a fun eclectic party on Saturday at her next door neighbors house. We got a good nights sleep (important after a crazy 4th of July in Sausalito) and on Sunday we went kayaking from Mission Bay out onto the Ocean. Later we had a great dinner in PB. I have to say that while San Diego overall has changed a lot since the campaigns in 1992 and 1995 the Pacific Beach area seems to be very much the same. Surfers and partiers and restaurants and buskers and basically a true beach lifestyle. As soon as I have some photos I’ll post them. I hope everyone else had a great – fun – crazy and relaxing 4th of July weekend as well!
On Monday when I was driving back from Chicago I got a call from my cousin Brian “Lunchbox” Schaupeter asking if I wanted to go to the fireworks ‘downtown’. It was only June 23rd.
Tonight it was St. Clair Shores’s fireworks. I rode my bike to friend and former County Commissioner Peggy Kennard’s house. Who happens to live across from Sara Roberts’ Father – Sarah is running for State House. (if anyone wants more info call me)\
I was the least senior by a chunk but it was fun to talk to people who could discuss the early compressed air vehicles in ..1910 – no they weren’t there then 🙂 but they had worked on projects like the solar car race and had some good insights.
I rode my bike the 3 miles – keeping green – AND avoiding traffic and of course I had my G&T in my basket .. I think I need to get a better drink holder. The only downside was that the fish flies WERE in force under the street lights. I’ll explain this unique D-troit phenomenon tommorow.
For now – Happy 4th of July .. D-Style.
Mom and I spent almost 7 hours weeding and trimming and clipping and cutting around my house today. We filled up 5 big bags with clippings. It was a humid 90 degrees so hard work. Soon after we finished a great thunderstorm rolled through – BIG winds and loud! So God finished the gardening by watering and also filled up the rain barrels for watering tomorrow! I will take photos tomorrow but just for fun – here is one from a week ago when Emma helped install the new mailbox…
In honor of the longest day of the year I joined thousands of other boaters across the country and had a beautiful sail on Friday and Saturday aboard Wanderbird. We stayed the night in Berkeley at the yacht club and saw Thievery Corporation at The Greek. It was a new band for me but OBVIOUSLY not for the rest of the sold out crowd 🙂 and a perfect evening with warm temperatures and good friends. Speaking of friends…
here is a pix of me and the mainsail my crazy friend Tom Neill bought at the bar one night. I have to say the boat sailed infinitely better than with the old main…. even on a 40 boat with a washer and dryer on board and a displacement of 23,000lbs new sails make a difference.
On the way back from the policy conference I stopped in at Chez Lindquist-Bishop and got to experience the perfection of Northern Michigan.. of course it helps that Linda knows EVERYONE and everything cool to do… basically we packed in a lot of talking and eating and drinking and relaxing in between….
Playing on boats…
