It is that time of the cup cycle – A lot of the teams have new boats on the water or in their sheds. (Before you ask – K-Challenge has elected to watch now and build later.) A week ago was the Luna Rosa launching complete with Monsignor Esteban Escudero, Auxiliary Bishop and General Vicar of Valencia’s Archdiocese blessing their boat. A little background on this: Just like all teams they have a ‘team bulletin board. And a few weeks ago – before anyone was thinking about the details of the christening – there appeared an flyer: “ NEEDED URGENTLY – A PRIEST!” Got a lot of confused looks and then smiles.
Last night I attended the Christening of USA 87. It was a full on cocktail and Moet Champagne affair. The show was pretty cool. They had 40 foot high a black curtain with a waterfall running over it hiding the boat from the audience. The MC, Gary Jobson, who is looking great, started the ceremonies by introducing a video that played on the black curtain and then the boat with their newfangled bow sprit nick named Steve poked through the curtains as if alive and smoothly continued until the whole foredeck was exposed.
After – MORE Moet! – It was fun to see a lot of America True people from BMW/Oracle but also from other teams. Katie Pettibone is over here for a week during Spring Break from her final year at Law School. She looked awesome and for those of you who don’t know, Katie’s boyfriend Ratty is the boat captain of USA 87 so it was a good night for him. Evidently there is some significance to USA 87 … as that was the year that Dennis brought the cup back. Also the year that Jimmy Buffett wrote the song – “We Ain’t Stealing, Were Just Taking back” ?
The evening also included a fashion show, which was VERY entertaining to see many of the guys as runway models…. And the youngest guy, Puck’s son Rock who did very well. He seemed to be concentrating on his job and totally oblivious to the model with him – which is more than I can say for much of the audience.
Last month it suddenly made sense to drive my sister’s new car from Detroit to San Francisco with a pit stop in Aspen to hang with such Leach (Sailor bow chick) and Jed Drake (ESPN and Suzy’s husband).
I was lucky in that it was sunny and beautiful almost all or the way. I had a surprisingly good salad in Kearney Nebraska – where i learned that you can ski… on a 200 foot drop at a local golf course. The next stop was in Aspen where the skiing was AMAZING.. and the people watching was … almost indescribable –
The prettiest part of the drive was near Moab. I took these pictures out of the sunroof as I was trying to beat a storm in Reno… didn’t succeed but the good news is in Dana’s Audi Quattro I was able to make it through the snow at least 5 miles an hour faster than most of the traffic… DOUBLE their speed!… Yes I was driving at 10mph 🙂
I am back in Spain. The Challenger Commission meetings are in full swing. George Clyde who was with America True, then GBR, and now with K-Challenge has just retired as the Chair of the Challenger Commission. There were congratulations all around for him doing such a good job over the past year plus.
I also have been able to catch up with some friends but mostly getting back into the K-Challenge operations. There is a lot to work to do if we are going to be ready for the Acts…. and we are still looking for sponsorship. The team is ready and VERY keen to get going so hopefully we will be able to do so – soon.
This is from my mom: “Dawn called yesterday to tell me about her trip to the vets with Steve’s 2 black dogs. They went for their yearly visit. Joshua is like Marmaduke – a square head and big paws – a big dog. Koda – short for Dakota, is a chunky black lab with beautiful brown eyes. Well, Dawn got to the vet and had quite a battle getting Joshua out of the truck and into the vet. He was very happy to get back into the truck!!! Dawn then took Koda’s leash, well she kinda got it but Joshua had the leash and he wasn’t going to give it to Dawn. No Way! Well, she got it and started to get Koda out of the truck when Joshua mounted Koda trying to hold him in the truck. ‘There was no way Koda should go visit the vet, it was really bad in there….in dog communication.’
