Speaking to Kids
March 31, 2009
In the past few days I’ve spoken to two different groups of young people. In Naples, Florida I had the chance to talk to a cross section of local youth who were interested in sailing or in trying sailing. We had a fun time chatting away talking about everything from horses to sailing to Outward Bound. This was in conjunction with the US SAILNG and Mount Gay Speaker’s Series for adults. which was covered in: http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2009/mar/27/sailing-one-sports-most-important-voices-appear-na/
The evening at the Gulf Coast Sailing Club went well, with one ‘oops’ in my new presentation which has been fixed. It was fun to hear the sea stories of the Melges Sailors who has been racing 30+ knots of wind…. Approximately 30 minutes of slogging upwind and 10 crazy minutes downwind ☺.
Today I spoke at the Kerby Elementary in Grosse Point Michigan. There was a full gym of 4-6th graders and they were a group full of energy and lots and lots of questions. The one thing that I know when I speak to kids is that I never know where their minds are going to lead us. Today it was into a discussion on submarines ☺. Hopefully all of the kids remember the one message that I think is so important: You can choose to do anything you dream of as long as you have passion and keep your options open. So to all of you – good luck.
PS: and to the kid who thought by skirt was cool – thanks ☺
